Society off the mark with first Diamond Jubilee gift
The first Diamond Jubilee gift for Her Majesty The Queen was a leather bound book of 21 original works of art by members of our Society. Two of our artists -President Julian Macey and Chairman Margaret Carver were invited to Sandringham House to deliver it and were received by The Queen's Lady in Waiting, Lady Susan Hussey and The Duke of Edinburgh's Equerry, Lieutenant Commander Adrian Mundin RN.
The leather bound book, embossed with gold leaf was a two year project by the Society and contains 21 works by 15 of its members. Norfolk's coastline, countryside, its people, architecture and wildlife are represented to reflect Her Majesty's life long association with the County.
The Chairman Margaret Carver said "It is a great honour for The Society to have work accepted by Her Majesty The Queen and it is most appropriate that it should have been received at Sandringham."
It is not yet known whether it will remain at Sandringham or be held at The Queen's library at Windsor.
The Lord-lieutenant of Norfolk, Mr Richard Jewson, said in his foreword to the book " The Great Yarmouth and District of Artists has since its formation in 1927 maintained its original aim to promote traditional art, This book is the Society's contribution to commemorate the long and outstanding service by Her Majesty to our country and the Commonwealth of Nations."
The Society is planning to produce a limited edition facsimile of this book and are hoping that this will be available at the Annual Exhibition.
The Society's 2012 Exhibition will be from 8th September to 15th September (excluding Sunday.)
